Self-love Valentine’s Day Gifts — I’ve always been a lover of love. The fairy tales, the happily-ever-afters, I loved it all. To me, for so long, Valentine’s Day belonged to this type of love only. The love that we grow up learning about from the world around us – the one that says love is what happens when you find your person, your other half. And this is a beautiful definition of it. But it’s incomplete.
“She wanted a relationship that consisted of loving someone unconditionally, flaws and all, so she started with herself.” – Stephanie Lahart, Author
What happens when you haven’t found your person yet? Are you not worthy of love?

For those of us that already struggle with feeling unworthy, Valentine’s Day (whether it’s meant to or not) becomes a reinforcement of that little voice in our heads that tells us something’s wrong with us for not being loved in that kind of way.
All those pink and red hearts that surround us at the supermarket and online start to feel like little symbols of exclusion. “You don’t belong in our love club!” they say. This can take our already low self-worth and shoot it down a million notches.
But, what if we redefined this love thing?
What if we painted a fuller picture of it? Added one of the most integral parts that make love whole? Added self-love to our understanding of love.
Once we do this, our understanding of Valentine’s Day expands as well.
Valentine’s Day is a day to love. Done. Period.
This is how I’ve come to define it.
It’s a day to express your love and affection to the special people in your life and to yourself. It’s a day to celebrate love fully, wholly, and completely. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, it’s the perfect time to show yourself some love.
“Unless we love and treat ourselves well, we are ill-equipped to do the same for others.” – Angela C. Santomero, American Television Producer
The truth is the love you have for yourself is what helps you love your special person. It’s what helps you do good for others and heal the world. It’s such an important part of love yet so often ignored and forgotten.
This Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to love yourself as well.
