Think back to a time you accomplished something, did motivation play a factor in helping you get there? How did you stay motivated to achieve your goals?
What is Motivation?
According to the Oxford dictionary, it is “a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way” and a “desire or willingness to do something.”
Motivation helps us to establish our goals and to continue to reach for them. It provides us with energy and a positive mindset. It can, however, be challenging to remain motivated. The stressors of everyday life and our insecurities can begin to set in, eating away at our motivation, and preventing us from working towards the goals we have set out for ourselves.
Here are ten ways to stay motivated to achieve your goals. These are strategies that I use to help me stay on track.
10 Ways to Stay Motivated to Achieve Your Goals:
# 1 – Set small goals with realistic time frames
When you set small goals and realistic time frames, you will be better able to accomplish each goal and thus feel better about yourself. Each time you achieve a smaller goal, you will obtain a boost of confidence that will motivate you even further. Breaking your goals down this way helps make something that may initially seem massive and intimidating into something small and achievable.
Equally as crucial is being realistic about your goals. They should be achievable in a timeframe that is realistic and healthy. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for failure and upset!
# 2 – Be clear about why and what you want to achieve and establish a plan on how to get there
You want to be clear and realistic about your goals to give yourself the best chance of achieving them. Being clear about why you’ve set a particular goal is helpful to the process. It reminds you of your reasoning along the way and can be a motivating force in itself.
When you spend some time writing out and establishing a plan of how to achieve your goals, the process becomes clearer, more concrete, and thus, progress becomes easier to measure. The more growth you see in yourself, the more motivated you will be.
# 3 – Keep a progress journal and jot down even the smallest accomplishments
A progress journal helps you keep track of all the major and smaller accomplishments you’ve had throughout your journey. The act of writing these things down helps you clearly, and concretely, see just how much you’ve progressed. Looking back at this progress journal of yours can have a tremendous effect on your motivation.
Doing this also keeps you in the mindset of looking out for ways you’ve progressed. Striving to see the positive over the negative is overall beneficial and helpful in keeping you motivated.
# 4 – Give yourself positive affirmation
To be motivated, you need to be in a positive mindset. When we feel down, or insecure about who we are and our abilities, it is all too easy to talk ourselves out of achieving what we want. We may begin to negatively self-talk, to the point where we feel completely discouraged and defeated, and ready to throw our goals out the window. For this reason, you want to pay attention to your mind’s internal dialogue and ensure that you are remaining as positive and confident as possible.
One way of promoting this is by saying a positive affirmation to yourself daily. These affirmations will remind you of how strong you are and that YOU can make your dreams come true! You have to believe in your amazing-ness!
# 5 – Be active
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, “exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins—chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress”.
With higher levels of endorphins, the lesser the adverse effects of stress we experience, and the better we feel. When we are feeling happier, and overall more positive, it then becomes easier to stay motivated.
Being active has multiple benefits. The benefits it does to one’s mental health, in particular, is what can be directly beneficially linked to remaining motivated.
# 6 – Eat healthy
A healthy diet can have profound effects on one’s mental health. We know that certain foods can improve your mental health by improving your gut health, which directly impacts your brain’s functions (Ross, 2013).
According to the Mental Health Foundation, “a balanced mood and feelings of well-being can be protected by ensuring that our diet provides adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and water.”
Therefore, when we are eating in a way that improves our overall mental health, we will be better prepared for the process of achieving our goals. We will feel more energized and in a healthier mindset to remain motivated.
# 7 – Sleep
According to an article posted on Harvard Health Publishing, scientists have discovered “that sleep disruption — which affects levels of neurotransmitters and stress hormones, among other things — wreaks havoc in the brain, impairing thinking and emotional regulation.”
Sleep is important to one’s mental well-being, and having a healthy, positive mind, leads to a greater ability to remain motivated. Feeling rested from a good night’s sleep, can give you the energy needed to motivate yourself throughout the day. If falling asleep is difficult for you, trying a relaxation technique before bed may be helpful.

# 8 – Find balance in your life
It is so important to find balance in your life – not all work, and not all play. This balance will keep you feeling healthy, energetic and ultimately motivated to continue striving to accomplish what’s important to you. Taking time each day to do something you enjoy can have a positive impact on your life.
With balance comes enjoyment of the parts of life you may so often take for granted, and this can lead to your happiness. With happiness comes a more positive outlook and greater motivation. Balance also means rewarding yourself for all the hard work you have been doing to accomplish your goals. Rewarding yourself will positively reinforce your abilities and motivate you to keep going.
# 9 – Don’t be so hard on yourself
Negative thoughts about ourselves can discourage us from moving forward. We want to be mindful of these thoughts. We also want to be mindful of how far we’ve come and how much we’ve already accomplished.
And if you haven’t accomplished yet what you have set out, it is important to be patient to yourself. For you to retain the confidence and resilience to keep going, you must be kind to yourself. You need to be your biggest cheerleader! Positive affirmations, as mentioned above, will help you remain in the best mindset required to move forward.
When you love yourself and understand your worth, you will feel proud of all that you’ve done so far and motivated to keep going.
# 10 – Be accountable
It can also be helpful to share your goals with someone else. Or, to join someone else in their journey and to share the progress of accomplishing your goals together. Doing this creates accountability. When you are accountable, you become more committed to the task at hand and more motivated to achieve what you set out to achieve. You become responsible for keeping up your end of the bargain and thus continue to push yourself towards your goal.
Although it is challenging to stay motivated to achieve your goals, it is possible to do. The next time you feel your motivation is slipping away, try:
- setting small goals
- being clear about what you want
- keeping a progress journal
- staying positive
- staying active
- eating healthy
- getting some rest
- keeping a balanced life
- not being so hard on yourself
- and being accountable.
